James Paul Kemp, Sr.
April 06, 1934 - June 22, 2015
SAVANNAH – James Paul Kemp, Sr., 81, died Monday, June 22, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Born April 6, 1934 in Birmingham, AL, Jim entered the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean Conflict, before enrolling at Georgia Tech. At Georgia Tech Jim was fortunate to play football for the legendary Bobby Dodd and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering.
After graduating from Tech Jim worked first for General Telephone and Electronics, then for Western Electric in Sandy Springs before join the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. Jim worked all over the world with the Corps before retiring with 36 years of service.
Jim loved spending time with his family, his church, football, Georgia Tech, the Marine Corps, computers, especially writing programs for them, and helping others. He was an Assistant Scout Leader and the father of two Eagle Scouts. He and his family were active members of the United Methodist church in many communities in which they lived. As a member of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, Jim was actively involved with the Horizon III Committee, Vacation Bible School, and Fellowship Suppers.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Carswell Kemp; two sons, J. Paul Kemp, Jr. (Rebecca) and Andrew C. Kemp (Glenna Sue); three grandchildren, Justin Click (Jayme), Amanda Hagler (Victor), and Heather Bayer (Jon); and five great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service celebrating Jim’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2015, in the Chapel of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests remembrances to Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, GA 31411 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 201 Television Circle, Savannah, GA 31406.
